We have some amount of news we want to share with you, a part from the start of the month, a part happened right in the middle. Let’s dive straight in!

Weblate 5.10

This is the one that happened on 14th February. Like every second month, we released a major Weblate version. This one delivered three new features and plenty of improvements and fixes, that you can check in the changelog.

New are the reStructuredText checks, for references and for syntax, which every documentation translator or maintainer should embrace happily. Turn them on and make your docs more consistent.

Other news is smaller, but still brings comfort — introducing the option of CSV output for API, and the import_projectbackup management command that you can use as an alternative of importing projects via UI; quite handy for massive imports!

With 5.10 being a release of improvements and fixes in many parts of the platform, we suggest you to skim the changelog at least. You will get informed about modifications in several machine translation engines, as well as compatibility changes if upgrading yourself. Bye, bye MariaDB 10.4 and PostgreSQL 12.

FOSDEM 2025

The first weekend in February has been important for Weblate even before its beginning in 2012, as Michal, our founder, has attended FOSDEM for many years before the first version. But this year was quite a milestone as well!

The first event in our community schedule was on Friday evening—an informal meeting in a pub to chat over a meal and drink, finishing reasonably soon to be fresh for the big show in the morning.

For the first time in years, it was sunny weather in Brussels for both FOSDEM days; the forecast fulfilled was a lovely surprise.

We didn’t have a talk this year, but that did not matter. The Weblate team presence has grown from previous two to four team members—Michal, Benjamin, Alice, and Gersona arrived in Brussels this time. And for the first time in Weblate history, we had a stand! Thanks to our friends from LibreOffice as we joined theirs. It was a pleasure to chat with hundreds (more probably thousands) of FOSDEM attendees over both days of our truly favorite event; about features, workflows, code, plans, ideas, cooperation, and much, much more. Many people left with our sweet T-shirts, others with stickers. Unlike in the BoF room we had on Saturday morning, there were many newcomers to the stand, learning about Weblate for the first time, right in the K building’s hall. An absolute blast, we will remember kindly. Thanks, everyone, for coming!

For the next year, we have some ideas and plans with people from Fedora, LibreOffice, Mozilla, and other communities, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

We appreciate that we really moved this year from “What is Weblate?” to “I want to speak with you about your great platform.” And our new types of stickers got very popular, which made us proud. Because our mission is truly about translations made securely and in a privacy-respecting way—#LiberateYourTranslations and making it #YourSoftwareYourLanguage.
